How to Connect Your VOIP Service to your Home Phone Line

Step 1

You’ll need a high speed internet connection. This is best obtained through a cable or fiber optic internet provider.
Step 2

Your VOIP provider will recommend or sell you a special wireless router that also has a phone connection on it.
Step 3

Your land-based phone line will no longer be used, although you can probably keep your old phone number. Find the phone box that the local phone company uses to bring the phone line into your house. Disconnect their wires using a screwdriver and put electrical tape around the ends since they do carry a low voltage. This will allow you to use the telephone wiring in your home to carry the VOIP dial-tone to every phone jack in your house without interference from the phone company’s line.
Step 4

Get a dual phone jack. Run a phone cord from the phone jack of the wireless router to either side of the dual phone jack. You should now have a dial tone at every phone jack in your house
